Yesterday I rather casually tweeted an idea about moving Fathers' Day to a weekend in the Fall. That simple little 140 character idea has become a mental obsession. I keep thinking of reasons why that would work better. So I decided to look up why we celebrate it in June. Surely there is some significance to why it's so randomly placed on the calendar.
Apparently not. There are some stories of it being placed on the closest Sunday of a deceased father's birthday in the early 1900's. So with that said, I officially declare the beginning of the "Fathers for the Fall" movement. Let's join together agreeing that Fathers' Day should be celebrated in the Fall when we can grill out with out passing out; when we don't have to cut the grass; when we can watch football all day long; when we too can receive gifts our kids made in school; when we can not feel quite as guilty for how Mothers' Day went down a couple of weeks ago.
Seriously, shouldn't there be a little more space between Mothers' Day and Fathers' Day? So Moms, are you with us? I'm thinking the second Sunday of October. So that means that next June will go by without a Fathers' Day celebration. Who's with me? This will actually take a motion from Congress but I think it's worth some time. It is an election year in 2012.
