So I decided to start the year 2010 off with a two day "unplug." What that meant for me was turning off my phone and computer and leaving them alone for two days. You see, I'm a bit addicted. To what you ask? Well, apparently anything I involve myself with. I love my family, friends, job, hobbies, activities, etc. Whenever I get on a kick about something I tend to immerse myself in it.
For instance: I'm a big Notre Dame football fan. I love my ND apparel, gear, shoes, memorabilia and decorations. I spend quite a bit of time shopping (I'll be it mostly window shopping) for ND stuff. Especially stuff for my children. When the holidays rolled around I found myself downloading song after song of Christmas music.
Here's the thing; most everything I involve myself in has a tendency to send me racing to my computer or phone. I'm either googling, tweeting, facebooking or, as I find myself now, blogging about it. So I decided to walk away from the two objects that are consuming far too much of my attention.
How'd that work out? Well, not as I planned. Instead of feeling free and untied I found myself a bit anxious. Top that off with Anita misplacing her phone and me needing to create a bumper for our Middle School ministry. However, I've decided that this was a good step in the right direction. No, I'm not deleting my twitter or facebook accounts. I am however going to try and keep the old laptop closed a bit more.
I want to laugh more in 2010. I want to have more conversations. I want to work out more. I want to play more board games. I want to hang out with friends more often. I want to go to the beach more. I want to spend more time Downtown. I want to ride bikes with my family. I want to have more people over for dinner. I want to read more. I want to go on vacations. All of these activities can be accomplished without my phone or computer.
What changes are you looking to make this year?
Hey! I think that's a great goal! More people need to think about doing that nowadays with all this crazy technology. :) My goals are to be more intentional this year and be a better friend and LISTENER!!!
